ACTOS & SMART over the Atlantic Ocean
One of our scientific goals is to estimate turbulent energy and particle fluxes over the ocean in order to explain the specific particle layers and in particular the particle sources. For such flights we have to keep ACTOS in a constant height for a certain time to get a reliable statistics. Here, we choose 150 m as a compromise between lowest possible altitude and safety. This height is well within the sub-cloud layer which typically reaches 500 m or so and is limited by a small temperature inversion and often even more pronounced by a sharp moisture jump. During such a flight the photo below was taken through the open door of the helicopter.
